If a poll were taken of the least dangerous places to be in the world, a cruise ship might be near the top. A cruise is, after all, by definition, a relaxing place where everything is supposed to be taken care of for you.

On a cruise, in theory, you have no responsibilities. Your food is prepared, activities are available, others chauffeur you around, all you have to do is relax. All that can be true, and yet it can also be true that there are still dangers onboard.

These dangers can be major and obvious or surprisingly small and almost negligible. On the major end, there are plenty of historic and recent examples. Starting with the most glaring, the Titanic was, after all, a sort of cruise ship, even if it had a more direct purpose as well. While few accidents on the sea have ever rivaled that of the Titanic, there are plenty of ships that have stalled in open waters, crashed into docks or other ships, or been harassed by pirates.

Another major concern, and far more common, is food poisoning. While ships do their best to keep food fresh, the combination of being away from land (where fresh ingredients can be bought) and the use of buffets onboard can lead to more than a few food poisoning incidents. These can be individual and confine, or, as in the case of the Celebrity Mercury in 2010, can affect hundreds of individuals on board.

While food poisoning is usually more uncomfortable than dangerous, a lack of fresh water can lead to more serious problems because of dehydration, especially for young children and the elderly.

In terms of dangers that everyone is aware of but thinks little of, there is always a risk of falling off. Every year, people fall off ships or fall from one level of a ship to another. With so much water around, falls aren’t the only possible injury, there are also slips to worry about.

Finally, a lot of injuries that involve cruise ships don’t even take place on board. A large number actually occur at the dock. Cruise ship docks can be dangerous places where any number of people can pick up pretty serious injuries.

Another location would be onshore at a tourist destination. Another big chunk of cruise related accidents happens either on the beach or in the towns.

While cruises remain a safe and fun way to take a vacation, and it is important not to overstate the risks, there are still potential dangers onboard and onshore, just as there are anywhere else.

Just be sure, no matter how little everyone worries about getting on a cruise ship, that you try to stay safe. You may have no responsibilities on board, but that doesn’t actually mean “no” responsibilities. You still have a responsibility to yourself to stay safe. So, watch out for slips and falls, choose what you eat carefully, and watch your step on the docks. Then, just enjoy the party.

According to the National Sleep Awareness Project, some 25 million Americans suffer from some form of sleep apnea, whether it is apnea, which involves breathing cessations of 10 seconds or longer, or hypopnea, in which the reduction of ventilation is at least 50% during sleep. While lack of restful sleep is a problem in and of itself, sleep apnea can also lead to more serious health problems like stroke, irregular heartbeat, high blood pressure, and other cardiovascular issues.

That’s why Fitbit has stepped into the game, planning to incorporate sensors into its new products that may identify apnea in consumers who wear their product. While the activity-tracking company has secured a large share of the market with its fitness-focused products, scientists are skeptical of how the company will successfully pull off tracking such a sensitive and complex health problem like sleep apnea.

This product, titled the Ionic Smartwatch, is said to have optical sensors and machine learning tools to identify the telltale cessation of breathing or reduced breathing in wearers of the device. For those who are knowledgeable of apnea and the way it is diagnosed, there are questions of whether or not people will actually wear the device when they sleep in the first place, and two, whether or not the sensors and algorithms in the device can actually accurately identify these conditions.

According to an article on The Verge, which covers tech and popular culture, the move is likely a calculated one by Fitbit, which is looking to jump in head-first into a growing market that analysts expect may hit $6.7 billion by 2021. This would be a definite improvement as the company has seen “iterative product launches, slowing sales, and a sinking stock price” over the past year and is clearly actively seeking to prove to investors that it can still innovate in an increasingly crowded health and fitness tech space.

Consumers’ fascination with health and fitness technology has urged companies to push out more products that claim to help us keep tabs on our health and fitness, but it brings about the question: Do these products actually do anything to help us stay healthy? Does tracking every detail of your day on an app really result in better overall health and wellness? Some would argue that any tool that helps remind you to stand up and walk more, or to watch your calories, or to push for fitness goals throughout the week has got to be beneficial to our daily lives. But others will say that these tech “wearables” and phone apps are simply cluttered that really have no effect on our fitness levels and that people will continue their unhealthy habits, even if they are wearing a tracking device that tells them otherwise.

It remains to be seen whether or not devices like the Fitbit Ionic Smartwatch will help identify and diagnose sleep apnea say, in the same manner, that professionals like the New York sleep apnea clinic Silent Night Therapy use, which involve doctors’ consultations, at-home controlled testing, test result review (again with a doctor), and treatment after the results are in. To many, it seems that a Fitbit analysis will never surpass the diagnosis and certainly cannot provide the expert treatment that only a doctor can provide.

A smile is the first thing the world sees; it frames a person’s face and adds greatly to first impressions. Dentists, such as cosmetic dentists with Babylon Dental Care, understand how important a smile is to a person and how much it can add to take from self-esteem. That is why there is an abundance of services to improve whatever imperfection on a smile someone feels uncomfortable with, such as

  • Chipped or broken tooth/teeth
  • Stains
  • Gaps
  • Crowding
  • Misalignment
  • Missing tooth

When people are happy, they smile more, but if they dislike their smile, insecurity taints their moments of happiness. Cosmetic dentists have improved their technique so that smile makeovers can be as natural looking as the client wants. What they do is take the shape of the teeth, form a mold, and talk with the client about which areas they would like to improve and which areas they love.

After examining the teeth, the cosmetic dentist can go over the options the client has to improve their smile, such as clear braces, porcelain veneers, orthodontic services, and whitening. The client can choose the most minimally invasive or most drastic change as they please to achieve the look they want that will make them the happiest.

A great smile has the power to change a person’s attitude and their outlook on life. Of course, client’s should care for their new smiles just as they would their natural teeth, by making regular checkups with their dentists, regular brushing, and daily flossing.

There is one core idea that is often overlooked in child custody cases – it is not about you, as it is more about the child and the child’s best interest. The best interest of the child can be ambiguous and inconsistent, because of the many factors that affect home life. But the child’s best interest can be determined using various factors, such as those enumerated below.

Abuse and Neglect

One of the most obvious factors is the history of abuse and neglect. A parent that has received allegations or has real instances of such things may receive less favorable responses from the courts. This is not surprising, as abuse and neglect can result into injuries, nutritional problems, and emotional and psychological responses from the child that may affect his or her development.

General Living Conditions

The court also considers the child’s future life with the parent, especially on aspects that are vital for dignified living, such as food, shelter, security, education, health, and recreation. The parent that has a better financial standing and can provide better living conditions is likely to have a more favorable response from the court.

Level of Adjustment

Not because you can provide more it already means that you will automatically be granted the better custody decision, because the court also considers the level of adjustment the child may make for his or her future life with you. As much as possible, the court wants the divorce and custody to have little effect on the child’s life.

Preference of the Child

The child also has a voice, whether he or she wants to go with the mother or father. But it is important to note that the child’s preference is not absolute, but it will be considered by the court in coming up with the decision. This is because the preference of the child obviously has a reason behind it, like for example, he or she may have a better relationship with the parent he or she has chosen.
